CXOToday has engaged in an exclusive interview with Jaya Mehrotra, Founder, Women Leadership Circle, Leadership & Executive Coach

  1. Tell us about the Women Leadership Circle’s inception. How did WLC come into being?

The idea for the Women Leadership Circle (WLC) was born from a deep passion to drive meaningful change for women in the professional world. It all began with my own experiences and observations of the obstacles women encounter in leadership roles. I saw firsthand the challenges and gaps that existed in support systems for women aiming to reach top positions.

Despite the presence of many networking platforms for both men and women, I felt there was a pressing need for a curated space where women with similar values and visions could come together. Market studies reinforced this belief, highlighting the unique needs and challenges faced by women in leadership roles.

The journey started with a simple networking event that quickly highlighted the need for a dedicated platform. As we brought together a small group of passionate individuals who shared this vision, it became clear how essential it was to create a space where women could not only connect but also thrive. This initial gathering laid the groundwork for what WLC is today—a thriving community committed to fostering growth and leadership among women.

WLC emerged from a vision to empower women leaders through a comprehensive approach—connecting them with valuable networks, offering executive learning resources, and advocating for increased representation in leadership and boardrooms. From the outset, our mission was to cultivate a supportive ecosystem where women could share their experiences, enhance their skills, and advance their careers.

Seeing the impact of our early efforts, we expanded our initiatives to include more structured programs and resources, all aimed at addressing the unique challenges women face in their professional journeys. It’s been an incredible journey, and witnessing the positive change and growth within our community continues to be immensely fulfilling.

  1. Can you elaborate on WLC’s journey so far and the milestones it has reached in the last few years?

The journey of Women Leadership Circle (WLC) has been nothing short of transformative. When I founded WLC, it was with a vision to create a vibrant community where women could find the support and resources to excel in leadership roles.

One of our standout achievements is the launch of our TRIBE program, which has become a cornerstone of our community. TRIBE brings together women from diverse backgrounds and industries to share experiences, foster collaboration, and support each other’s growth.

We have also been fortunate to secure the support of sponsors- 360 One, Mentor – Vivek Gambhir, and a dedicated advisory board who believe in our mission and contribute their expertise and resources. Their involvement has been instrumental in our growth and success.

Our journey has seen us host numerous impactful learning events that address key issues and share best practices. These events range from workshops on leadership skills to panel discussions featuring trailblazing women leaders. These gatherings have been instrumental in fostering knowledge exchange and inspiring our members.

As we continue to evolve and grow, we are proud of the milestones we have achieved and are excited about the future. Our community is stronger than ever, and we remain committed to empowering women leaders and amplifying their impact in the professional world. These achievements mark just the beginning of what we hope to accomplish, and we’re thrilled about the possibilities that lie ahead.

  1. Women in tech leadership roles or aspiring C-suite roles face distinct challenges compared to men. How is WLC making an impact to empower women?

Women in tech and aspiring C-suite roles often face unique challenges like bias, fewer role models, and the pressure to constantly prove themselves. At WLC, we are actively addressing these issues through targeted initiatives.

Our leadership development workshops are designed to tackle the specific barriers women face, such as negotiating skills, assertiveness, and overcoming imposter syndrome.

Additionally, we are committed to creating visibility for women in tech by showcasing their successes and providing platforms for them to share their stories. This not only boosts their confidence but also serves as an inspiration to others.

By addressing these challenges head-on, we’re not just empowering individual women but also working to shift the broader narrative around women in leadership.

  1. What is the membership model of WLC, and how many members are onboarded so far?

Absolutely. The Women Leadership Circle (WLC) operates on an exclusive, selective membership model, where we meticulously handpick women entrepreneurs and leaders who are making a significant impact in their respective fields. We currently have 25 exceptional members, including CEOs and C-suite executives, who are renowned for their trailblazing efforts and their ability to drive transformative change.

Our membership is anchored by 10 founding members who play a pivotal role in co-creating and leading our initiatives, emphasizing our commitment to being a peer-led organization. Additionally, we have a mentor and dedicated advisory board that provides invaluable guidance and support.

We began our onboarding process in November, with an ambitious target of securing 25 members for this year, which we have successfully achieved. By maintaining a high-caliber, selective membership, we aim to foster a dynamic network of women leaders who are not only changemakers but also aim for equity in boardrooms and beyond.

  1. What role does WLC play in mentorship, sponsorship, and empowering women leaders in STEM?

At WLC, we are dedicated to empowering women leaders  through a multifaceted approach. Next year, we’ll launch a dedicated mentorship program to provide personalized guidance from experienced leaders, helping women navigate their careers and overcome challenges. Our coaching program will offer targeted support to develop specific skills and leadership capabilities. We also focus on connecting women with sponsors who can advocate for their advancement and open new opportunities. Through these initiatives, we aim to create a robust support system that helps women excel and lead effectively.

  1. What is your opinion of diversity and inclusion in STEM leadership in Corporate India?

Diversity and inclusion in STEM leadership in Corporate India are critical issues that require ongoing attention and action. While there has been progress in recent years, significant challenges remain.

On the positive side, we are witnessing a growing awareness of the importance of diversity in STEM fields. Many organizations are beginning to recognize that a diverse leadership team can drive innovation, improve decision-making, and better reflect the diverse customer base they serve. Initiatives such as mentorship programs, targeted recruitment efforts, and diversity training are helping to create more inclusive environments.

However, the journey is far from complete. Women and other underrepresented groups still face systemic barriers and biases that can hinder their advancement in STEM careers. These include cultural stereotypes, lack of role models, and limited access to leadership opportunities. In Corporate India, these challenges are often exacerbated by traditional gender roles and a shortage of supportive policies that address work-life balance and career development for women.

To drive meaningful change, it’s essential for organizations to not only implement diversity and inclusion initiatives but also to foster a culture that genuinely supports and values diverse perspectives. This includes creating clear pathways for advancement, ensuring equitable access to opportunities, and addressing unconscious biases.

  1. What are some of the best resources and programs provided by WLC to support the professional growth of women in this field?

At Women Leadership Circle (WLC), we are dedicated to empowering women leaders with a variety of impactful resources and programs. Here’s a closer look at what we offer:

TRIBE Circles are a cornerstone of our community. TRIBE stands for Trust, Respect, Inspire, Belong, and Elevate. These circles provide a confidential and supportive environment where members can openly share their personal and professional challenges. It’s a space where vulnerability is valued, and authenticity is celebrated. Through TRIBE, members engage in deep, meaningful discussions, exchange insights, and support one another, fostering connections that drive both personal and professional growth.

Women on Boards is another key initiative aimed at increasing female representation in boardrooms. This program equips women with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to thrive in boardroom settings. By aligning learning opportunities with participants’ achievements, Women on Boards helps women step into influential roles and drive positive change within their organizations.

We also provide Tailored Learning Experiences. Our workshops are specifically designed to address the unique needs and aspirations of our members. Led by industry experts and thought leaders, these sessions cover critical topics for personal and professional development, offering invaluable insights and guidance. This tailored approach ensures that members can navigate their growth journeys with clarity and confidence.

In addition, our one-on-one mentorship program offers personalized advice and support. Our advisory board provides strategic insights and resources to help members overcome challenges and advance in their careers.

We host a range of Networking Events and Conferences that bring together industry leaders, experts, and peers. These events offer valuable opportunities for members to gain new insights, expand their professional networks, and explore career opportunities.

Lastly, our Advocacy and Representation efforts are focused on increasing the visibility of women in leadership roles and boardrooms. By celebrating our members’ achievements and advocating for their successes, we aim to challenge stereotypes and promote more inclusive practices across industries.

Through these programs and resources, WLC is committed to creating a supportive environment that empowers women to lead, grow, and make a significant impact in their fields.

  1. What advice do you have for younger women in the STEM field, and how can they succeed in a male-dominated culture?

For younger women entering the STEM field, succeeding in a predominantly male-dominated environment requires a blend of confidence, support, and resilience.

Firstly, it’s essential to embrace your unique perspective. The diversity of thought that women bring to STEM is a powerful asset. Your different viewpoints can spark innovation and drive progress, so don’t hesitate to contribute your ideas and insights.

Building a strong support network is also crucial. Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and allies who can offer guidance, share experiences, and provide encouragement. Advocating for yourself is another important aspect. Be confident in your abilities and don’t shy away from promoting your achievements. Whether you’re negotiating for new opportunities or speaking up in meetings, it’s vital to assert yourself and make sure your contributions are recognized.

Continuous learning and adaptation are key in the rapidly evolving field of STEM. Stay curious and committed to expanding your knowledge and skills. Seek out additional training or educational opportunities to remain competitive and at the forefront of industry developments.

It’s also valuable to look up to role models who have successfully navigated similar challenges. Their experiences can offer both inspiration and practical advice. Leverage your network to connect with these individuals and learn from their journeys.

Developing resilience is crucial as well. The path to success is rarely smooth, and setbacks are inevitable. Focus on your goals, learn from challenges, and stay adaptable. Persistence and a positive mindset can help you overcome obstacles and achieve long-term success.

Additionally, be an advocate for inclusivity within your workplace. Support initiatives that promote diversity and encourage others to join you in fostering a more equitable environment.

Lastly, don’t forget to prioritize your well-being. Balancing work with personal life and managing stress is important for maintaining overall health and productivity.

  1. How can we break down existing barriers and create a more equitable, supportive work environment, especially in a culture with traditional gender roles?

To create a more equitable work environment, especially in cultures with traditional gender roles, we need to actively challenge stereotypes and biases through education and awareness. Leaders should champion diversity and inclusion, setting an example for the entire organization. Implementing fair policies for recruitment, promotions, and flexible work arrangements can ensure everyone has equal opportunities. Establishing mentorship and sponsorship programs helps provide the support needed for advancement. Additionally, fostering a culture of allyship and celebrating diverse achievements can drive meaningful change and create a more supportive and inclusive workplace.

  1. What is the vision of WLC for women in leadership roles, especially in tech roles?

At Women Leadership Circle (WLC), our vision for women in leadership, particularly in tech roles, is to create a future where women are not just participants but leaders and innovators shaping the industry. We aim to empower women by providing them with the tools, networks, and opportunities they need to excel in leadership positions. Our goal is to break down barriers, advocate for greater representation, and ensure that women’s voices are integral to shaping the future of technology. Through tailored learning programs, mentorship, and a supportive community, we strive to build a pipeline of confident, skilled women who can lead with impact and drive transformative change in tech and beyond.

  1. How do you envision the landscape of women in STEM leadership evolving in the next 10-20 years?

As more women rise to leadership positions, we will witness a ripple effect, with more young women being inspired to pursue and advance in STEM careers. This increased visibility and representation will contribute to a more equitable and innovative industry, where diverse perspectives drive groundbreaking solutions.

We can also expect a surge in initiatives and policies designed to support women’s advancement, including mentorship programs, flexible work arrangements, and equitable career development opportunities. The integration of these practices will help dismantle existing barriers and create pathways for women to excel and lead.

Overall, the landscape will evolve towards a more inclusive and dynamic environment, where women in STEM leadership are not only breaking new ground but also setting new standards for success and innovation.
