CXOToday has engaged in an exclusive interview with Mr. Samrath Singh Kochar, Founder and CEO, Trontek
- Can you provide an overview of Trontek’s journey in the electronics industry, highlighting key milestones and achievements?
Trontek Electronics Private Limited has come a long way since its inception in 2004. Starting as a small enterprise focused on battery trading, Trontek has evolved into one of India’s leading manufacturers of high-performance batteries. Our journey began with lead-acid batteries, but recognizing the global shift towards cleaner energy, we ventured into lithium-ion technology. A key milestone was in 2017 when we launched our range of lithium-ion batteries, catering to the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) market. By 2020, we had established a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, doubling our production capacity and significantly reducing our carbon footprint. Today, Trontek is known for its innovation, quality, and customer-centric approach, with a market presence in over 20 countries. We have a team of 450 people and our batteries power around 50 % of e-rickshaws in Delhi alone.

Trontek’s commitment to sustainability not only benefits the environment but also aligns with our customers’ values, creating a positive impact on society.
- What are the biggest challenges and opportunities currently facing Trontek in the Indian and global market?
Currently there are some key challenges and opportunities in the dynamic battery manufacturing industry. Supply chain bottlenecks, particularly the dependency on imported cells till the time Indian manufacturer doesn’t source cells. Technological gaps and the need for substantial R&D investment to keep up with global leaders are other hurdles. However, these challenges also present opportunities. The growing demand for EVs and renewable energy solutions offers immense growth potential. By focusing on innovation, expanding our product portfolio, and strengthening our supply chains, Trontek is well-positioned to capitalize on these opportunities.
- How can charging infrastructure development improve the adoption of EVs?
The development of robust charging infrastructure is crucial for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Accessible, reliable, and fast-charging stations reduce range anxiety and enhance user convenience, making EVs a more viable option for consumers. Government initiatives and private sector investments are accelerating the deployment of charging networks across urban and rural areas. For instance, India plans to install over 69,000 public charging stations, significantly boosting EV adoption rates. Improved infrastructure will not only support current EV users but also encourages potential buyers to switch to electric, thereby driving market growth and contributing to a greener environment.
- What are the key factors affecting the lifespan of an EV battery?
Several factors influence the lifespan of an EV battery. Temperature plays a crucial role; extreme heat or cold can degrade battery performance over time. Charging habits also impact longevity—frequent fast charging can accelerate wear and tear, whereas slow charging is generally more battery-friendly. The depth of discharge is another factor; avoiding full discharges and keeping the battery within a moderate charge range can extend its life. Additionally, the quality of the battery and the materials used in its construction are vital. Advanced battery management systems (BMS) that monitor and regulate performance can further enhance the lifespan and efficiency of EV batteries.
- How is the sector planning to accelerate the adoption of EVs and what are the challenges and opportunities in the battery segment?
The EV sector is accelerating adoption through a combination of technological advancements, policy support, and consumer incentives. Innovations in battery technology promise higher energy densities and faster charging times. Government policies, including subsidies, tax incentives, and stricter emission regulations, are encouraging both manufacturers and consumers to embrace EVs. However, challenges remain, particularly in terms of high initial costs, limited charging infrastructure, and supply chain constraints. Opportunities lie in developing local supply chains, investing in R&D, and fostering collaborations between industry and academia. By addressing these challenges and leveraging opportunities, the sector can drive significant growth and sustainability in the battery segment.
